The Federal Railroad Administration Train passing pines with mountain peaks in the
background.

A major aspect of improving rail safety is enacting and enforcing regulations requiring safe practices by train and motor vehicle operators, as well as by pedestrians. Most recently, the crossing team has been involved in creating a rule that requires trains to sound their horns when approaching public crossings and set guidelines for communities to develop safe alternatives to the train horn.

To improve driver behavior and prevent trespassing, the crossing team has worked extensively with law enforcement to promote safety on and near railroad tracks. To that end, FRA has sponsored "Officer on the Train" events with Operation Lifesaver. The crossing team has also worked with law enforcement agencies by supporting photo enforcement and providing citation jackets with railroad safety information. Additionally, the crossing team is working towards adding a part-time position for active law enforcement officers in each of our regional offices.
