South Central High-Speed Corridor

Description :

Major cities: San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Tulsa

Segment Mileage Top Speed (goal) Travel Time (goal)
Tulsa to Fort Worth 322 n/a mph n/a
Little Rock via Dallas/Forth Worth to San Antonio 672 n/a mph n/a

The South Central Corridor extends southward from Tulsa, OK, to Oklahoma City, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio, TX with a branch from Little Rock, AR through Texarkana and Dallas, TX.

Using discretionary Next Generation High Speed Rail Program technology demonstration funding, FRA together with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation performed precision aerial digital mapping of the developing high-speed corridor between Dallas-Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa. This state-of-the-art technique uses a differential Global Positioning System technique and a helicopter-mounted laser scanner to produce extremely precise digital records of terrain and structures, accompanied by synchronized visual videotapes. This method is becoming a nationwide standard to support planning by railroads, States, and many other organizations. Access to the digital records will greatly facilitate studies of infrastructure upgrades as well as grade crossing and other risks.

Texas has requested federal funding to perform an initial feasibility study of high-speed service on the Texas portion of the corridor. However, all eligible funding for these activities is earmarked for other projects in the FY 2004 FRA budget. The state has also begun a study to identify the risk levels at grade crossings along the corridor.

The FRA and the Federal Highway Administration jointly manage the Section 1103(c) grade crossing hazard elimination program in designated high-speed corridors. $1.565 million has been invested in reducing grade crossing hazards in the South Central Corridor since the program's beginning in 1993. Details on the grade crossing inventory in this corridor can be found HERE .
