The P&E Division plans and evaluates rail-related safety projects, programs, and initiatives; helps ensure cost-effective solutions to railroad safety problems; manages rail safety performance goals; and identifies critical rulemaking information for FRA decision-makers and staff. Major activities include:

—> Conducting benefit/cost analyses that measure the short- and long-term economic viability of railroad
     safety programs, regulations, and standards.
—> Planning and conducting operations-research studies that help identify and resolve rail safety problems.
—> Providing technical and policy input to budgetary and legislative proposals.
—> Developing, updating, and analyzing rail safety performance goals under the Government Performance and
     Results Act
—> Administering a program for clearing and reducing information collection and reporting burdens on the public.
