Kevin Thompson is the Associate Administrator for Communications and Legislative Affairs at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). As an Administration appointee, he was named to the position in December 2011. Mr. Thompson is responsible for message development and coordination with the press and key stakeholder constituencies, as well as the agency’s liaison to Congress.
Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Mr. Thompson worked for nearly two decades in public service at the state and municipal levels, as well as non-profit corporations. Prior to joining the FRA, Mr. Thompson had ten years of experience in transportation, including airport and transit properties in Chicago and the Washington State Department of Transportation and other service delivery and transportation planning agencies in the Puget Sound Region. In addition to transportation, Mr. Thompson has led government relations and public engagement efforts for hospitals and academic medical research centers. He is also a veteran manager of electoral campaigns and grass-roots organizing efforts.
Mr. Thompson holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the Evans School at the University of Washington and a Baccalaureate Degree from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. He is also an alumnus of the American Public Transportation Association’s Leadership APTA Program. Mr. Thompson is a Chicago native and currently lives in Washington, D.C. with his partner Greg and their Labrador, Dakota.
