ABSTRACT: The Federal Railroad Administration and the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway Company are jointly sponsoring the construction of a test track as part of the railroad's heavy tonnage main line in Kansas. The objective of the project is a determination of the levels of increased train stability provided by 8 specimens of incrementally improved track support. A further objectiv eis a definition of the cost-benefit relationship associated with each augmentation of stability. The various test segments are defined, associated instrumentation requirements are outlined, and progress to date described.
