ABSTRACT: This report describes the efforts of Japanese transit industry- manufacturers and transit operators- in the area of advanced propulsion systems for urban rail vehicles. It presents different chopper system designs, new ac drive developments, various commercial frequency and audio frequency signaling systems, investigations of potential electromagnetic interference problems and possible countermeasures. Finally six Japanese transit systems using chopper cars are described in some detail in Appendix A and a widely used commutation circuit is described in Appendix B.
