ABSTRACT: [From the Preface] This report is the result of an assessment of the WMATA Metrorail System which took place over a six-month period between April and October of 1978. The report not only provides a general description and status of the system at that time, but also focuses on those current problem areas having a significant impact on the service and operation of the system. In addition, specific recommendations by the assessment team for supporting the resolution of each key problem area are included, along with lessons learned from WMATA's experience to date that could be useful to other transit properties. It should be recognized that the information and recommendations in this report were consistent with the status of the Metrorail System at the time of the assessment in mid-1978; since that time, expansion of the system plus on-going problem resolution efforts by WMATA have changed the currentness of some of the report content.
