ABSTRACT: The Lightweight Flatcar (LWFC) Evaluation Program was conducted to provide a comparative evaluation of the dynamic performance of two prototype skelton or lightweight flatcars with a conventional TTAX flatcar. For this purpose, measurements of the acceleration response of the entire vehicle system (axle, carbody, trailer, and container) were made under both controlled and revenue-service conditions. The controlled tests were conducted at zero (nominal), 50,000 and 125,000 accumulated miles of service. The results indicate that in terms of dynamic performance the lightweight flatcars were comparable overall to the conventional TTAX flatcar. This conclusion, however, must be evaluated for each special application, since situations were observed in which one flatcar was markedly superior to the other in performance.
