ABSTRACT: This document details the history of railroad safety in the last one hundred years. It includes historic counting of employee fatalities as well as information about safety legislation, including: The First Safety Appliance Act (1893), The Second Safety Appliance Act (1904), The Hours of Service Act (1907), Signal and Train Control Legislation (1906-1937), and the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 1974. Transport of hazardous materials, engineer certification, and alcohol and drug programs are also discussed.
