ABSTRACT: A full-scale locomotive impact test was performed September 10, 2002. The test involved a SD-45 locomotive, modified to meet AAR Specification S-580, and three trailing loaded hopper cars impacting a stationary log truck at a grade crossing at 50.4 mph. The locomotive broke through the logs and continued down the track. The 3/8-inch steel sheet covering the short hood of the locomotive was significantly deformed, but the collision posts and anti-climber remained intact. Although no logs hit the windshield of the locomotive, there were high strains on the windshield center-post. The loads measured during the impact on the ATD (test dummy) in the driver’s seat showed values well below NHTSA proposed injury criteria.
