ABSTRACT: On Monday, March 14, 2016, at approximately 9:41 p.m., MDT, westbound Union Pacific Railroad (UP) inter-modal freight train, KG1LAC-13, consisting of three head-end locomotives, one rear-end locomotive distributive power unit (DPU), and 129 loaded cars consisting of a mixture of double stack single and articulated multi-well inter-modal railcars, collided head-on with standing eastbound UP local coal train, LCK41-14. Local Train LCK41-14 consisted of two leading locomotives and 45 loaded coal cars. The collision occurred at Milepost (MP) 844.25 approximately 1,500 feet east of the limits of the East Granger, Wyoming, Signal Control Point (CP) G844 on UP’s Salt Lake Area’s Evanston Subdivision. CP-G844 is located approximately 3 miles west of the town of Granger, Wyoming, and approximately 30 miles west of the city of Green River, Wyoming. Train KG1LAC-13 had diverted from Main Track 1 through a reversed position switch and collided with standing Train LCK41-14, which was stopped on a controlled side track known as the Long Siding Track. The collision occurred at a recorded speed of 30 mph.
