SUBJECT: Accident Investigations
KEYWORDS: Accident Investigations, Amtrak
ABSTRACT: On Sunday, April 3, 2016, at 7:50 a.m., EDT, Amtrak southbound Train Number 89, consisting of one head-end locomotive, eight passenger coaches, one café car, and one baggage car, was operating on Main Track Number 3 at 106 mph when the Engineer noticed maintenance-of-way (MOW) employees and equipment on Main Track Number 3. The Engineer initiated an emergency brake application; however, the train struck a backhoe at 102 mph, resulting in the derailment of the locomotive. The train’s impact with the backhoe cast pieces of that machine into the west side of the first passenger coach causing multiple contacts resulting in damage to that passenger coach.
