FRA Grade Crossing Safety and
Railroad Trespass Prevention Workshops

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) hosted free Grade Crossing Safety and Railroad Trespass Prevention Workshops across the United States that focused on railroad trespassing prevention, grade crossing safety, or related topics.

One of the workshops’ overarching goals was to identify existing and emerging technology designed and used to mitigate, reduce, and ultimately eliminate highway-rail grade crossing and trespasser incidents. Another overarching goal was to raise awareness of the dangers and effects of highway-rail grade crossing and trespasser incidents, to seek out low-cost solutions, and to discuss practicable ideas for technological improvements for vehicular and pedestrian safety at highway-rail grade crossings.

Although each workshop varied based on local concerns, all workshops included discussions on:

• Leading industry best practices

• Root causes
• Local strategies to reduce incidents
• Incident effects on communities
• Recommendations for future actions to reduce incidents
• Funding solutions for implementing mitigation strategies
